September 23rd, 2001 - ATHENS, Greece (AP) Fans of the Greek soccer club AEK Athens tried to burn the American flag before the team's match against Scotland club Hibernian, and booed during a moment of silence for the victims of the terrorist attacks in the United States.

"What went on in Athens disgusted me," Hibernian coach Alex McLeish said Saturday upon returning to Scotland.

"With what happened last week, innocent people of all nationalities in America, anyone would show respect."There was a minute's silence at all 77 European games played during the week. But McLeish said that as the players stood in silence to pay their respects in the Athens stadium before Thursday's UEFA Cup game, many AEK fans jeered through the silence and tried to burn the American flag. "What badly disappointed me was that there was no effort made by anyone, the police included, to do anything about it," McLeish said. "When I first heard all the shouting and jeering

The Notis tour has been cancelled. I had an interesting conversation with a member of the Greek Media based in New York City. He mentioned that a newspaper in Greece had written an article about the controversy over the tour. This newspaper has made a claim that this website urged an email campaign to the United States Immigration Service.

This website at one time urged concerned parties to email The Company sponsoring the tour 30,000 emails.

This objective was taken straight from another campaign from concerned Greeks over a map utilized by CNN showing the wrong boundary lines between Greece and Turkey. The campaign worked and CNN corrected their error.

It was never, ever my objective to urge all concerned to email the Immigration Service to bar Notis from coming to the United States. I find it absolutely amazing how this was reported. If you think about it logically, why would the Immigration service even care if someone comes to the US that has made disparraging comments about the US? Folks, it makes no sense and the most important thing aspect is that it is totally false. Now we see the Greek political machine turning its wheels. Remember Gregorios Lambrakis.

Now that the tour has been cancelled, I urge all of us together to put collective pressure on Greece in an attempt to demystify the vitriolic Anti-Americanism that prevails and has severely damaged our relationship.
